Mansehra to Abbottabad daily: the commute, the road, and how to share it

Mansehra and Abbottabad are the two big towns of Hazara, and a lot of people live in one and work or study in the other. It is a short enough run to make every day, which makes it one of the best routes in the region for a shared daily car instead of wagons and Suzukis.

The road

The two towns are roughly 25 to 30 km apart on the Karakoram Highway (N-35). On a clear road that is well under an hour, but the KKH through the towns and bazaars is slow at school and office times. Some drivers use sections of the Hazara Motorway (E-35) to avoid the worst of it, which can be longer in distance but steadier in time. Ask your driver which way they go — it changes where they can pick you up.

Who makes this trip every day

• Office and government staff working in Abbottabad and living in Mansehra, or the other way round.
• Students going to colleges and universities in either town — Hazara University is on the Mansehra side.
• Hospital staff and patients heading to Abbottabad’s hospitals, including Ayub Teaching Hospital.

What a daily arrangement looks like

Most offers are a simple out-and-back: leave Mansehra in the early morning, return from Abbottabad in the afternoon. A daily run is currently posted out at 7:00 AM and back at 3:00 PM, which fits school and government hours; office jobs that finish later need a later return, so check before you commit.

Daily carpools are usually paid by the month. Before you pay, agree:

• the exact pickup point and the time the car leaves it;
• the return time, and what happens if the driver is late or you are;
• what happens on holidays, on days you do not travel, and in bad weather;
• whether you pay weekly or monthly — weekly is safer for the first month.
