South Punjab is where a lot of Lahore goes home. Students, office workers and families make the trip for weekends, Eid and weddings, and plenty of them drive with empty seats. A carpool turns those seats into a cheaper, quicker option than the bus terminal.

Most cars now take the motorway: the M-3 from Lahore to Abdul Hakeem, then the M-4 on to Multan. Lahore to Multan this way is roughly 340 km and usually takes around four to four and a half hours. The older National Highway (N-5) through Okara, Sahiwal and Khanewal is still used, especially by drivers stopping in those towns, but it is slower.
Bahawalpur is roughly another 100 km beyond Multan, through Lodhran, so the whole trip from Lahore is usually five to six hours. Muzaffargarh sits just west of Multan across the Chenab, and is a common drop for cars continuing towards Dera Ghazi Khan.
Southbound drivers usually collect passengers on the way out of the city rather than in the centre:

Offers on this route often list two or three towns at once — “Multan / Muzaffargarh”, “Lodhran / Bahawalpur”. That can mean the car stops at both, or that the driver is going to one of them and has not decided which. Ask exactly where the car finishes and whether it can drop you on the way. A drop at the motorway interchange instead of inside the city is common, so check how you will get the last few kilometres.
Because the trip is long, many drivers leave at night or very early and arrive in the morning. Night departures are normal on this route — just confirm the exact time and date, and that you are comfortable with a late arrival at your end.
The driver sets the fare. Ask whether it is per seat, whether motorway tolls are included, and whether a shorter drop (Lodhran rather than Bahawalpur, or Multan rather than Muzaffargarh) costs less. A fair way to think about it is in how to split fuel costs fairly in a carpool.
On a five-hour trip the basics matter more: match the car and number plate, meet at a public place, share your route and arrival time with someone at home, and agree any rest stop in advance. The safety guide covers the rest.
