Islamabad to Lahore by carpool: the M-2, the pickup points, and how to find a seat
Islamabad to Lahore is one of the busiest intercity trips in the country. Students go home for the weekend, people travel for work, and families visit relatives. A lot of it happens by car with one or two people in it, which makes it an obvious trip to share. This guide covers the route, where carpools actually meet at both ends, what a fair share looks like, and how to find a seat or fill your empty ones.
Most Islamabad–Lahore carpools take the M-2 the whole way.
The route: M-2 or the GT Road
The M-2 motorway is the default. It is roughly 375 km from Islamabad to Lahore and usually takes four and a half to five hours, including a stop. It runs south past Chakri and through the Salt Range near Kallar Kahar, then on past Bhera, Pindi Bhattian and Sheikhupura into Lahore.
The GT Road (N-5) goes through Gujar Khan, Jhelum, Kharian, Gujrat and Gujranwala. It is slower, but it is the road to take if you or your passengers are getting off in one of those cities on the way.
The stop: most cars break the trip once, usually at the Bhera service area roughly halfway. Agree on it before you set off so nobody is surprised.
Where carpools pick up and drop off
Drivers pick points on their own way out of the city, so the same few names come up again and again.
Islamabad and Rawalpindi side: Faizabad, Zero Point, Peshawar Mor near G-9, Koral Chowk on the Expressway, and 26 Number (Chungi No. 26) in Rawalpindi on the way to the motorway. If you live in Bahria Town or DHA, ask the driver whether the route passes your gate.
Lahore side: Thokar Niaz Baig, Babu Sabu, Kalma Chowk, Johar Town and the Ring Road exits. Drivers going on to Gulberg or DHA often drop there if it is on their way.
On Sawarri the driver sets the fare. The fair way to work it out is to add the fuel for the trip and the motorway tolls, then divide by everyone in the car, including the driver. Tolls are charged per car, so they are part of what you share. Say clearly whether the price is per seat, whether luggage is included, and whether a shorter drop (Sheikhupura, Pindi Bhattian) costs less. How to split fuel costs fairly has a worked example.
Check the pickup point, the time and the fare on the ride.

Before you travel
Talk to the driver or passenger before the day. Agree the pickup time, the fare, luggage and the stop. Meet in a public place, check that the car and number plate match the ride, and share your trip with someone at home. The safety guide and carpooling safely as a woman cover the rest.
