Hyderabad to Karachi carpool: the M-9, the pickup points, and how to find a seat

Hyderabad and Karachi are close enough that people make the trip for a single day’s work, a hospital appointment or a flight — and far enough that a bus, a coaster or a hired car all feel like a chore. That is exactly the gap a carpool fills: someone is already driving down the M-9, and the back seat is empty.

The M-9 runs almost straight across flat, dry country between the two cities.

The road

Almost every car uses the M-9 motorway (the old Super Highway). Centre to centre the trip is roughly 160 km and usually takes around two to two and a half hours, most of it on the motorway itself; the slow part is getting in and out of Karachi. The National Highway (N-5) through Thatta is the long way round and very few carpools use it.

Where drivers pick up in Hyderabad

Hyderabad offers tend to name a chowk rather than an address. The ones that come up again and again:

If your pickup is not on the list, ask. Most drivers will take a small detour for a confirmed seat, but they will not wait.

Where they drop in Karachi

The car enters Karachi at the Sohrab Goth end, and from there the drop depends on where the driver is going. Some head into Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Shahrah-e-Faisal; others now use Shahrah-e-Bhutto (the Malir Expressway) from the Kathore side down towards Qayyumabad, DHA and Clifton, which avoids much of the city traffic. Ask which way the car is going before you agree a drop point — the difference can be an hour across Karachi.

Timing

Offers on this route are usually one-off trips on a stated day rather than daily commutes. Two things catch people out:

Shared seat or full car?

On this route you will see two very different kinds of offer side by side. A shared seat means the driver is going anyway and you pay a share. A full car (“poori gaari available”) is private hire — you pay for the whole vehicle. Both are legitimate, but they are priced completely differently, so check which one you are looking at.

Fare

Shared-seat fares on Sawarri are set by the driver, not by us. Always ask whether a quoted figure is per seat or for the whole back seat, and whether it includes the motorway toll. The basis for a fair split is in how to split fuel costs fairly.

Before you travel

Check the car and number plate match what you were told, meet at a public chowk, share the trip with someone at home, and save the driver’s number before you set off. The safety guide has the full list.

Finding a seat

Driving down the M-9 with empty seats? Offer a ride. You set the fare and keep all of it — Sawarri takes no commission.
